ATRANI (1 km away from Amalfi on the main road to Salerno): It has a
picturesque position being located in a small cove down the Dragon Valley,
among high walls coming right down to the sea. In the past it was inhabited
by the most noble population of the Amalfi Republic. Main Attractions:
the Church of S. Salvatore de Bireto (where the Amalfi doges were once
elected) and the Collegiate Church of S. Maria Maddalena. RAVELLO: It's a quiet spot and lies on terraces stretching to the sea
between the Dragon Valley and the Reginna Valley, a scene of magnificent
natural beauties. Attractions: The Duomo (11th century) with S. Pantaleone's
Chapel where the blood of the patron saint of the town is kept; SCALA: It's the birthplace of Brother Gerardo Sasso, founder of the Order
of Spedalieri di S. Giovanni, later becoming the Order of the Knights
of Malta. CONCA DEI MARINI: It's a quiet and small seashore resort and ancient
maritime centre. PRAIANO: It's a fishing village and a pleasant seaside resort, with a
number of tourist facilities and its delicious "Marina di Praia",
a little beach full of boats and fischermen's houses. POSITANO: It's an important resort among the most elegant places on the
Coast with its quaint hipped roofs and eastern-type white houses. To visit:
the Church of S. Maria Assunta with its large majolica dome which overlooks
the beach. Just off the coast you can see the "Li Galli" islets.
Legend has it that they were the refuge of the mythical mermaids that
lured Ulysses. MINORI: It faces a pretty beach. At the times of the Amalfi's Republic,
it was an important arsenal which held and still holds the remains of
a Roman Villa of the 1 st century A.D. You should visit the Basilica of
S. Trofimena (11th century). MAIORI: It has one of largest beaches on the Coast and is a lively seaside
resort set like an amphitheatre on the sea at the opening of the Tramonti
Valley. CETARA: It's a picturesque fishing village and a seaside resort of inhabitants
leading a very simple life. VIETRI SUL MARE: It looks on the Gulf of Salerno, at the beginning of
the Amalfi Coast. It has a large beach. FURORE: You can see the famous and deep valley coming right down to the
sea from the edge of Agerola's plateau. TRAMONTI: It has a steep valley covered with citrus orchards and vineyards at the lower level and chestnut woods at a higher level. Going up through this valley you can reach the Valico di Chiunzi (656 metres). |
